$488.750 and still a bargain

Het betreft een inmiddels tien jaar oude emissie van de Verenigde Staten, gewijd aan de NYSE, de New-Yorkse beurs. Het vel, dat in twee verschillende druktechnieken werd uitgevoerd, laat 28 zegels met kopstaand middenstuk zien. Bij de resterende twaalf zegels ontbreekt dat middenstuk zelfs geheel. Het geheel maakt een bijzonder vreemde indruk, maar de verklaring is simpel: het vel werd na het aanbrengen van de eerste drukgang kopstaand in de pers gelegd. Niet alleen leverde dat een kopstaand middenstuk op, maar door de verschuiving van die middenstukken bleven ook nog eens twaalf zegels onbedrukt, met als resultaat dat er nu twaalf middenstukken op de velrand te vinden zijn. Het vel kwam op 16 juni bij Greg Manning onder de hamer en bracht dus bijna een half miljoen dollar op. Ondanks dat indrukwekkende bedrag kon het toch nog wel eens een koopje blijken te zijn, namelijk als de nieuwe eigenaar het vel opdeelt in paren en losse zegels. Elke zegel uit het vel is immer een variëteit op zichzelf.
